Abstract
EXIF is a common standard
of basic image metadata used in digital cameras and in image management
software. Masahide Kanzaki created an ontology
that allows the EXIF metadata to be expressed in RDF. NEXIF is a simple
adaptation of the Kanzaki's ontology to fit it into the NEPOMUK
Information Element Framework. This document gives an overview of
NEXIF, its classes and properties.

the work of the Task-Force ontologies within the NEPOMUK project.

Exchangeable Image Format
(EXIF) is a specification of image metadata vocabulary
published by the Japan Electronics and Information Technology
Industries Association [EXIFSPEC].
It has gained wide acceptance within the digital photography community.
Most of today's digital cameras annotate the pictures with EXIF
annotations.
An Exif description is to a large extent a set of name/value pairs.
Exif descriptions have little structural information, apart from simple
part-of relationships. Therefore adapting it to RDF is quite
straightforward. This has been expertly done by Masahide Kanzaki [EXIFRDF]. His ontology
meticulously recreates all properties defined in the specification
document as rdf properties. They don't have their domains and ranges
specified though. Therefore, during the adaptation of Kanzaki ontology
to the Nepomuk Representational Language the domains and ranges have
been added.
The Nepomuk Exif Ontology (NEXIF) has been linked with two other
ontologies. The first link allows for easy annotation of image files
with exif properties. It has been realized with the nexif:Photo
class, which is a subclass of nfo:Image.
Example files that show how to use the expressive power of the ontology will be
published here in near future.
